Overview

Zero personal income tax, and the substance rules that come with it.

The UAE is the most straightforward high-income relocation available to many people: no personal income tax, residency routes that do not require you to be physically present, and an infrastructure built explicitly for internationally mobile professionals.

The Golden Visa — ten-year renewable residency for qualifying investors, entrepreneurs, specialised talent and outstanding students — is the flagship. Freelance and self-sponsored employment visas serve the same population at lower cost and with shorter validity, and for many remote professionals the practical difference from a Golden Visa is smaller than the price gap suggests.

The 2023 introduction of federal corporate tax at 9% on profits above AED 375,000 is the change most existing plans have not absorbed. A free-zone company is not automatically outside the regime: qualifying free-zone entities retain preferential treatment only where they meet substance and qualifying-income conditions. Companies that were structured for a zero-tax environment now need a genuine review.

The second consideration is that the UAE's attractiveness is partly a function of what you are leaving. Zero tax is a large gain only if you were paying tax before. It does nothing for someone leaving a low-tax jurisdiction, and it comes with a cost of living and a residence-visa dependency on continued qualifying status.

Tax position

How United Arab Emirates taxes you

The UAE imposes no personal income tax. Federal corporate tax applies at 9% on taxable profits above AED 375,000, with a 0% rate below that threshold. Free-zone entities may qualify for a 0% rate on qualifying income if substance requirements are met. US citizens remain subject to US worldwide taxation regardless of UAE residency.

What works

Strengths

  • No personal income tax on employment or investment income for individuals.
  • Residency does not require physical presence — useful for people who travel continuously.
  • Deep banking, legal and corporate-services infrastructure in English.
  • Time zone and flight connectivity make it workable as a base rather than a full relocation.

What to watch

Risks and caveats

  • The 9% corporate tax applies above AED 375,000; free-zone exemptions are conditional on substance and qualifying income.
  • Economic substance, transfer-pricing and country-by-country reporting obligations now apply to many entities that previously ignored them.
  • Residency is tied to maintaining the qualifying status; a lapsed investment or free-zone licence can invalidate the visa.
  • Zero personal tax does not resolve tax obligations in the country you left, particularly for US citizens and green-card holders.
